Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

At present, the collection of the Paintings Gallery comprises around 1,600 catalogue entries, spanning works from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Around 940 works are currently available to view at Online Collections.

The already substantial collection from the bequest of Count Lamberg-Sprinzenstein, who in 1822 bequeathed some 800 paintings from his internationally renowned collection to the Academy, has been significantly extended in the course of the 19th century, through state purchases as well as numerous further donations by aristocrats and citizens. These included the large body of works by Heinrich Friedrich Füger, bequeathed to the Academy in 1878 by his son, or the 58 paintings donated to the Academy gallery by Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein, between 1879 and 1925. In the 20 th century, especially the significant legacies of Oskar Kutschera-Woborsky, of Johanna and August Ritter von Albrecht Hönigschmied (1934 and 1937) and of Wolfgang von Wurzbach-Tannenberg (1957) need to be mentioned.

The collection was further added to in the second half of the 20th century, especially through the generous contributions made by the Association of Friends of Fine Arts , which came into being as an association of friends supporting the Paintings Gallery.
In 1988, the Academy’s Plaster Cast Collection was incorporated into the Paintings Gallery Collection.

Among the highlights of the collection are, above all, Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Judgement of the Last Jugement Triptych (on permanent display), Dirc Bouts’ Coronation of the Virgin and major works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, as well as masterpieces by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Another key focus is 17th-century Dutch genre painting, encompassing all its genres, including works by Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael and Pieter de Hooch. Among the first-rate works from the Italian schools are those by Botticelli, Titian, Giambattista Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi. The art of the Vienna Academy around 1800, centred on Heinrich Friedrich Füger, is also superbly represented.

A selection of around 180 masterpieces has been on display alternately in the exhibition format Considering the Collection (since 2022), featuring different themes and contemporary Inserts, as well as in conjunction with themed exhibitions.
