NATURE GONE ASTRAY? Hybrids, Gnomes and Monsters (not only) in the work of Hieronymus Bosch

Paintings Gallery

Exhibition curated by Martina Fleischer

As the Gemäldegalerie’s last exhibition in the year of 500 coming back of Hieronymus Bosch’s dead there can be visited the show NATURE GONE ASTRAY? Hybrids, Gnomes and Monsters (not only) in the work of Hieronymus Bosch . Beginning with Bosch’s strange creatures, differing greatly from the picture of an ideal, beautiful nature – often half human, half animal, often beastly recreations – it shows astounding examples of medieval illumination and also disconcerting objects of contemporary art, ultimately raising the question of the boundary of human fantasies of creation and their dealing with nature.
